Gulgashat-i-Punjab
The general history of the Punjab from 1469 to
1849 is illustrated by paintings showing monuments in Amritsar, Lahore and other cities in the kingdom of the Punjab, written by Pt . Raja Ram Tota, it is sometimes dated 1849 and sometimes 1860 AD. It is illustrated with paintings bf historical figures (including young Maharaja Ranjit Singh, Maharaja Sher Singh) and views of buildings all over the kingdom. Even the miniature paintings are from unknown artists, details on some of the historical illustrations show a clear inspiration from Imam Bakhsh Lahori’s workshop. Although they are more richly decorated with gold and vivid colours, their captions and the historical explanations in persian are often misleading, still they show the interest given by some enlightened people to the architectural heritage of the Punjab and its capital Lahore. The fact that a similar drawing of the Govind Garh fort at Amritsar Is found both in the Gulgashat-i-Punjab.
